A Very Experienced IT Project Manager (who also sings)
As is probably true for many people I feel that I am not terribly good at 'selling myself'. This has always been true. However, I believe that now having spent 20 years as a self-employed Project Manager, I must be quite good at it. I would point out that a major Pharma has quite strict rules regarding the 'life of a contractor', normally limited to 11 months; My last assignment in this space lasted something over 4 years.
My key aim is to 'build something' and 'make a difference'. I know that might sound cliched, but the desire to 'build something' is very strong. It must be my creative side that drives this. Delivering some system, or functionality that makes a difference to someone's daily life is a good thing to do. I really do still get a buzz out of large scale rollouts, delivering complex IT projects and getting things done in challenging environments. I work very well with technical staff and teams, and with my technical background I operate very well as an interface between technical and non-technical audiences. I have also enjoyed working with off-shore teams with within and outwith the principal organisation. On occasion I have ended up as a mentor for others, often informally, and that also provides a significant glow of satisfaction.
I have worked in many, many places round the world, most recently in Shanghai (that I loved) establishing new processes and a new regional role for which I then recruited a local resource to fill.
As a hobby I sing in a 8 piece close harmony group, singing a wide variety of songs from Rogers and Hammerstein to the Happy Mondays via many things in between. Our mash-up of 6 Bob Marley songs 'all at once' is a wonder to behold, and is a wow with our audiences.
